Hedelmöittämisen, also known as fertilization or conception, is the biological process where a male gamete (sperm) fuses with a female gamete (egg or ovum) to form a new organism. This process is fundamental to sexual reproduction in most multicellular organisms. In humans and many other animals, fertilization typically occurs internally within the female reproductive tract. Sperm are released from the male and travel to meet the egg, usually in the fallopian tube. One sperm cell successfully penetrates the egg's outer layers and fuses with its nucleus, combining the genetic material from both parents. This fusion results in a zygote, the first cell of a new individual, which then begins to divide and develop.

In plants, the process can be similar, with pollen (containing male gametes) reaching the ovule (containing the female gamete) and fusing. However, plants have evolved diverse mechanisms for pollination and fertilization, including wind, water, and various animal vectors. In some cases, self-fertilization can occur, where the gametes come from the same individual. Cross-fertilization involves gametes from different individuals. The successful fertilization sets in motion the development of an embryo, which is either nurtured within the female body or enclosed in a seed or egg, depending on the species. This genetic recombination through fertilization is crucial for biodiversity and the adaptation of species over time.
