heavyketones
Heavy ketones, also known as very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) or simply long-chain ketones, refer to ketone bodies that are synthesized from fatty acids with a carbon chain length exceeding 16 atoms. Under normal physiological conditions, the primary ketone bodies produced in the liver are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone, all derived from shorter-chain fatty acids. However, during prolonged fasting, starvation, or certain metabolic disorders, the body can mobilize and metabolize fatty acids of greater length, leading to the formation of these heavier ketone compounds.
The metabolism of heavy ketones is less well-understood compared to their shorter-chain counterparts. While the liver
