Havbundne refers to the seabed, the bottom of the oceans where the water column meets the ocean floor. The term is used in Nordic languages to denote the seabed or its plural forms. The seabed spans environments from sunlit continental shelves to the dark, high pressure abyssal plains and trenches, and it forms the interface between geology and the living world.

Geology and sediments: The seabed comprises sediments such as sand, silt, and clay laid over bedrock or older sediments. Its topography includes continental shelves and slopes, rises, abyssal plains, seamounts, and trenches. Sediment transport, deposition, and tectonic processes continually reshape the surface. In many regions, carbonate or siliceous deposits accumulate, preserving records of past climates and ocean chemistry.

Biology and ecosystems: The seabed hosts diverse benthic communities, from meiofauna to large invertebrates and fish. Depth, substrate, and resource flux condition communities, with habitats including soft-sediment plains, rocky outcrops, cold seeps, and hydrothermal ecosystems in some regions. Life there often depends on detrital rain from above or chemosynthetic sources near vents.

Human interactions: The seabed is used for fishing, seabed mining, oil and gas extraction, cable and pipeline routes, and scientific sampling. Mapping and exploration employ multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, and coring technologies. Environmental concerns include habitat destruction from bottom trawling, sediment disturbance, pollution, and climate-change effects like deoxygenation.

Conservation and research: International and regional regulations aim to protect seabed habitats, while marine protected areas and responsible management help mitigate impacts. Ongoing research improves understanding of biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, carbon storage in sediments, and Earth's geological history.
