Határrétegek, a Hungarian term, translates to "boundary layers" in English and refers to a fundamental concept in fluid dynamics and heat transfer. It describes a thin region of fluid near a solid surface where viscous forces are significant and cannot be ignored. Outside this boundary layer, the fluid flow is generally considered inviscid.

The existence of the boundary layer is due to the no-slip condition, which states that the fluid velocity at the solid surface is zero. As the fluid moves away from the surface, its velocity gradually increases until it reaches the free-stream velocity. This velocity gradient within the boundary layer is responsible for the generation of shear stress.

Boundary layers can be either laminar or turbulent. Laminar boundary layers are characterized by smooth, orderly flow, while turbulent boundary layers exhibit chaotic and irregular motion. The transition from laminar to turbulent flow depends on various factors, including the flow velocity, the surface roughness, and the fluid properties.

The concept of boundary layers is crucial for understanding phenomena such as drag, heat transfer, and mass transfer in many engineering applications, including aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and thermal systems. Analyzing the behavior of these thin layers allows engineers to predict and control fluid behavior and optimize system performance.
