Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, often referred to as hasnyálmirigyműködés in Hungarian, is a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes to properly break down food. This can lead to malabsorption of nutrients, particularly fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Symptoms can include steatorrhea (fatty, greasy stools), abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and unintentional weight loss.

The most common cause of hasnyálmirigyműködés is chronic pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas that can result from alcohol abuse, gallstones, cystic fibrosis, or autoimmune diseases. Other causes include pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, and certain surgical procedures.

Diagnosis typically involves stool tests to measure enzyme levels and imaging studies such as CT scans or MRIs to assess the pancreas. Treatment focuses on enzyme replacement therapy, where patients take pancreatic enzyme supplements with meals to aid digestion. Dietary modifications, such as a low-fat diet, may also be recommended. In some cases, managing the underlying cause of the pancreatic dysfunction is crucial. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly improve quality of life and prevent long-term complications.
