Harmaasävykuva, often translated as grayscale image or black-and-white image, is a digital image that displays information in shades of gray. Unlike color images, which use multiple color channels (typically red, green, and blue) to represent a wide spectrum of hues, grayscale images rely on a single channel where each pixel's value corresponds to a specific intensity of gray. This intensity can range from pure black to pure white, with all intermediate shades of gray in between.

The creation of grayscale images can occur in several ways. They can be captured directly by a camera that is set to monochrome mode or by converting a color image into grayscale. The conversion process involves discarding color information and calculating a luminance value for each pixel, which is then mapped to a shade of gray. This luminance is often derived from the original color components using a weighted average formula to better mimic human perception of brightness.

Grayscale images are used in various applications. In photography and art, they can evoke a timeless or dramatic aesthetic, focusing on form, texture, and contrast without the distraction of color. In scientific imaging, such as medical scans (like X-rays or MRIs) or satellite imagery, color might not be relevant or could even obscure important details, making grayscale the preferred format. Furthermore, grayscale images require less data storage and processing power compared to their color counterparts, making them efficient for certain digital applications and older display technologies. The depth of grayscale is determined by the number of bits used per pixel; for instance, an 8-bit grayscale image can represent 256 different shades of gray.
