A hardphone is a traditional, non-mobile telephone that connects to a telephone network via a physical cable. These devices are typically found in offices or homes and are distinct from softphones, which are software-based telephone applications that run on computers or mobile devices. Hardphones are characterized by their physical handset, base unit, and a physical connection to the wall jack or network switch.

Hardphones can operate using either analog or digital technology. Analog hardphones connect to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) directly. Digital hardphones, often used in Voice over IP (VoIP) systems, connect to a network via an Ethernet cable and transmit voice data over the internet. These VoIP hardphones typically require a separate power source, often supplied via a power adapter or Power over Ethernet (PoE).

The functionality of hardphones varies. Basic models offer standard calling features such as making and receiving calls, dialing, and hanging up. More advanced hardphones may include features like speakerphone, caller ID display, voicemail access, conference calling, call forwarding, and programmable buttons for speed dialing or accessing specific functions. The interface usually consists of a keypad for dialing numbers and a small screen for displaying information. Despite the rise of mobile communication, hardphones remain a common fixture in many business environments due to their reliability and integration with PBX systems.
