Hardheidsklasse is a term used in Dutch-speaking contexts to describe the hardness class of a material or product. It refers to the level of resistance of a material to permanent deformation, as determined by standardized hardness testing. In engineering documentation, a hardheidsklasse communicates whether a component has sufficient wear resistance, machinability, or durability for its intended service conditions.

A hardheidsklasse is defined by a hardness value or a range obtained with a standardized method, such as Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell, or Shore tests. The specific value and the meaning of the class depend on the test method and the standard used (for example ISO, EN, ASTM). Consequently, a class may be expressed as a numeric value (such as HRC 60) or as a range (for instance HV 180–210), with the exact interpretation tied to the chosen testing protocol.

Hardness is influenced by material composition and heat treatment, so changes in processing can shift a part from one hardness class to another. In practice, higher hardness classes are typical for wear-intensive components such as gears or cutting tools, while lower classes may be preferred for parts requiring easier machinability or lower brittleness. The concept of hardheidsklasse aids procurement, quality control, and compatibility between components, tools, and manufacturing processes.

Limitations should be noted: surface hardness may not reflect core hardness, and surface treatments can create gradients.
