Happoryhmä is a Finnish term that translates to "acid group" in English. It is commonly used in chemistry to refer to a functional group that contains an acidic hydrogen atom. The most prevalent example of a happoryhmä is the carboxyl group (-COOH), which is found in carboxylic acids. This group is characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). The presence of the electronegative oxygen atoms in the carboxyl group makes the hydrogen atom in the hydroxyl part weakly acidic, meaning it can donate a proton (H+) in certain chemical reactions, particularly in the presence of a base.
