hapnikuvõimetu
Hapnikuvõimetu is an Estonian term used in biology and medicine to describe an organism, tissue, or system that cannot tolerate or function in the presence of oxygen. The word combines hapnik (oxygen) and võimetu (unable). In biological usage it corresponds to the concept of an obligate anaerobe in English: organisms that require an anaerobic environment and are harmed or unable to grow when exposed to oxygen. Often this sensitivity is due to the lack or low activity of enzymes that detoxify reactive oxygen species.
