Hapnikupuudus, also known as hypoxia or oxygen deprivation, refers to a condition where the body or a region of the body is not receiving an adequate supply of oxygen. This can affect the entire body (systemic hypoxia) or specific organs or tissues (local hypoxia). The brain is particularly vulnerable to oxygen deprivation, and even a few minutes without oxygen can cause irreversible damage.

Several factors can lead to hapnikupuudus. Systemic causes include respiratory problems such as asthma, pneumonia, or lung injury, as well as circulatory issues like heart failure, anemia, or shock. Environmental factors, such as high altitude where oxygen levels are lower, or carbon monoxide poisoning, can also result in inadequate oxygen reaching the tissues. Localized hypoxia can occur due to blockages in blood vessels, such as those caused by blood clots (thrombosis or embolism), or compression of blood vessels.

Symptoms of hapnikupuudus vary depending on the severity and the affected area. General symptoms of systemic hypoxia can include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, confusion, dizziness, bluish discoloration of the skin and lips (cyanosis), and in severe cases, loss of consciousness and seizures. Localized symptoms depend on the specific tissue affected; for example, lack of oxygen to the heart muscle can cause chest pain (angina or myocardial infarction). Prompt recognition and treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications and preserve organ function. Treatment aims to restore adequate oxygen supply to the body.
