Hapettumaa is a term that may be encountered in Estonian-language discourse to describe land or soil characterized by elevated acidity, effectively an acidified landscape. It is not a formal scientific designation, but it can be used descriptively in discussions of soil chemistry, environmental pollution, or regional typologies of terrain.

Acidification of soil occurs when hydrogen ions accumulate in the soil solution, often as a result of acid deposition from industrial emissions, the use of acidic fertilizers, drainage practices, or certain mining and forestry activities. The pH of the soil decreases, which can increase the mobility and toxicity of metals such as aluminum, reduce the availability of essential nutrients, and alter soil microbial communities and nutrient cycling. These chemical changes can have cascading effects on plant health, crop yields, and ecosystem composition.

Ecological and agricultural impacts of hapettumaa include stunted plant growth, shifts in vegetation communities toward acid-tolerant species, and potential biodiversity losses. Long-term acidification can also degrade soil structure and reduce soil fertility, complicating land management and forestry practices.
