Handtufting is a method of creating rugs and textile art by inserting yarn into a backing material. It is distinct from other rug-making techniques such as knotting, weaving, or knitting. The process typically involves a tufting gun, which is a specialized tool that punches loops of yarn through a primary backing fabric. The depth and density of these loops can be controlled by the operator.

Once the desired pattern is tufted, the loops can be left intact to create a textured surface, or they can be cut to form a plush pile. The back of the tufted piece is then secured, often with a latex adhesive and a secondary backing fabric such as cotton or jute, to ensure the yarn stays in place and to provide durability.

Handtufting allows for a wide range of design possibilities and can be used to create intricate patterns and custom designs. It is a relatively faster method compared to traditional hand-knotting for creating dense pile rugs. The technique is used by both artisans for unique art pieces and by manufacturers for producing commercially available rugs.
