Haliidideks refers to a group of chemical compounds known as halides. Halides are binary compounds that involve a halogen atom, such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, or astatine, bonded to another element. The most common halides are ionic compounds formed between a halogen and a metal, for example, sodium chloride (NaCl) or potassium bromide (KBr). These compounds often exhibit crystalline structures.

In organic chemistry, halides also refer to compounds where one or more hydrogen atoms in a hydrocarbon have been replaced by a halogen atom. These are called organohalides. Examples include chloromethane (CH3Cl) or bromoethane (C2H5Br). Organohalides have a wide range of applications, including as solvents, refrigerants, and pesticides, although some have raised environmental concerns due to their persistence and toxicity.
