Halfrüstungssets, often referred to as half plate armor, represent a significant stage in the evolution of personal protection in medieval and early modern warfare. These sets of armor combined the protection offered by full plate armor with the greater mobility and reduced weight afforded by less encompassing designs. Typically, a halfrüstungsset would cover the torso, shoulders, and upper limbs, while leaving the lower legs exposed or protected by lighter mail or simpler greaves.

The development of halfrüstungssets was driven by the need to balance defensive capabilities with the demands of combat. Full plate armor, while offering superior protection against many forms of attack, could be cumbersome and expensive. Halfrüstungssets provided a more practical solution for many soldiers, particularly those who did not require the absolute best protection or who operated in contexts where agility was paramount. They offered a significant upgrade over mail alone, providing much better defense against crushing blows and thrusts.

The specific components of a halfrüstungsset could vary depending on the era and region of manufacture, but commonly included a breastplate, backplate, pauldrons (shoulder defenses), vambraces (forearm defenses), and rerebraces (upper arm defenses). Gauntlets might also be included. The integration of these pieces allowed for a degree of articulation, enabling the wearer to move more freely than in more segmented or heavier armor. Halfrüstungssets were prevalent from the 14th century onwards and saw use across a wide range of military roles.
