A hajtótengely, commonly translated as driveshaft or propeller shaft, is a mechanical component used to transmit torque and rotation, usually between two other components. It is most often seen in vehicles, where it connects the transmission to the differential. The primary function of a hajtótengely is to transfer power from the engine, through the transmission and any other necessary gear reductions, to the wheels.

Hajtótengelyek are typically made of steel or aluminum to provide strength and rigidity while minimizing weight. They often feature universal joints, also known as U-joints or cardan joints, at one or both ends. These joints allow the hajtótengely to operate at an angle, which is necessary because the transmission and the differential are not always perfectly aligned. This misalignment can occur due to the suspension system of the vehicle allowing for movement.

In rear-wheel-drive vehicles, a single hajtótengely typically runs from the transmission to the rear differential. In all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive systems, there may be multiple hajtótengelyek, including a front driveshaft connecting the transfer case to the front differential and a rear driveshaft. The length and diameter of a hajtótengely are critical design parameters, influenced by the amount of torque it needs to transmit, the speed of rotation, and the distance between the connected components. Vibrations can be an issue, and driveshafts are often balanced to minimize them.
