Habitatmakers is a term used to describe individuals, groups, or organizations engaged in creating, restoring, or managing habitats—spaces where living organisms can thrive and people can reside, work, and interact. The concept covers both human-centered habitats (homes, neighborhoods, workplaces) and natural or semi-natural habitats (urban greenspaces, wetlands, coastal zones).

Practitioners use ecological design and systems thinking to integrate building, landscape, and social systems. Common approaches include green infrastructure such as green roofs, porous pavements, and rain gardens; habitat restoration of wetlands and meadows; and living architecture that uses bio-based materials or living walls. Habitat networks that connect parks and corridors for wildlife are also emphasized. Participatory design and co-creation with communities are frequently central.

Participants include architects, landscape architects, urban planners, ecologists, engineers, conservationists, community groups, and municipal authorities, sometimes supported by researchers or educators. Projects may be funded through public programs, private developers, or non-profit initiatives.

The goals are to support biodiversity, increase climate resilience, and improve human well-being. Outcomes can include higher species richness, provision of ecosystem services such as pollination and flood mitigation, cooler urban areas, and enhanced mental and physical health. Equitable access to nature and opportunities for community engagement are often pursued.

Challenges include regulatory hurdles, maintenance costs, knowledge gaps, and balancing conflicting stakeholder needs. Successful habitatmaking typically requires long-term stewardship, clear governance, and ongoing funding to preserve ecological and social benefits.
