Högskolor is a term used for higher education institutions in Sweden and other Nordic contexts that focus on professional and applied education. Traditionally, högskolor were distinguished from universities by their closer ties to the labor market and a stronger orientation toward applied research rather than broad theoretical inquiry.

In Sweden, högskolor are public or state-funded institutions operating under national laws for higher education. They are subject to quality assurance and accreditation by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ). The system has been aligned with the Bologna Process, structuring degrees into bachelor’s and master’s cycles. Doctoral education has historically been the remit of universities, although högskolor may participate in joint research projects and offer advanced master’s programs with applied research components.
