gólok

Gólok are the goals scored in football and other ball sports. They are a central statistic used to measure performance, determine match results, and compare teams and players over a season or career. In Hungarian sports language, the word gól is a loanword from English, written with an acute on the o, and the plural form is gólok.

Statistics about gólok are kept by national associations, leagues, and international bodies. A team’s or a player’s goal tally is recorded for individual achievement (gólok egy játékos rekordja) and for team performance in a competition. The total number of goals, goals per game, and goals by season or tournament are common metrics. The goal difference, gólkülönbség, is used to rank teams in standings alongside total goals scored and conceded.

Special terms related to gólok include öngól for an own goal, scored by the defending team. When a player scores three goals in a single match, the achievement is called a hat-trick; in Hungarian usage it is often described as hat-trick (hatrick) or as hármas gól. The top scorer in a league or tournament is the gólkirály, a common award in many competitions. Gólok are also referenced in discussions of assists and goal timing, but the scoring act itself remains the core statistic of the sport.
