Géostatistiques is a branch of statistics that deals with spatial or spatiotemporal phenomena. It is used to analyze and model data that have a spatial component, meaning that the location of the data points is important. Géostatistiques methods are used in a variety of fields, including geology, mining, environmental science, agriculture, and meteorology.

The core concept in géostatistiques is spatial autocorrelation, which refers to the tendency for values of a variable to be more similar at closer locations than at farther locations. This is often visualized using a variogram, which plots the variance of the difference between data points against the distance between them. The variogram helps to understand the spatial structure of the data and to determine the best way to interpolate or predict values at unmeasured locations.

Kriging is a common interpolation technique in géostatistiques. It uses the spatial autocorrelation described by the variogram to produce the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) of values at unsampled points. Kriging not only provides an estimated value but also an estimate of the uncertainty associated with that prediction.

Other applications of géostatistiques include spatial simulation, which generates multiple possible spatial realizations of a phenomenon, and spatial regression, which models the relationship between a spatial variable and other explanatory variables while accounting for spatial dependence. The goal is to provide a more accurate and robust understanding of spatially distributed phenomena than traditional statistical methods that ignore spatial relationships.
