Commonly found in rural and peri-urban parts of Sweden, gårdsbutiker offer farm-produced items such as vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, dairy, preserves, baked goods, honey, flowers and plants, and may also stock complementary regional or artisan products from neighbouring producers.

Operations range from modest self-service stands and seasonal markets to year-round shops with staffed counters, cafés, or on-site processing facilities. Many gårdsbutiker combine direct sales with activities such as pick-your-own fruit, farm tours, workshops and online ordering with collection at the farm.
