Gyökérfelületsimítás is a dental procedure also known as root planing. It is a deep cleaning treatment performed by dentists or dental hygienists. The primary goal of root planing is to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from the root surfaces of teeth, both above and below the gum line. This process goes beyond a standard cleaning, which typically focuses on the visible parts of the teeth.

The procedure involves using specialized instruments to meticulously scrape away the rough deposits that have accumulated on the tooth roots. This roughness can harbor bacteria that contribute to gum disease. By smoothing the root surfaces, it becomes more difficult for bacteria to reattach and proliferate, allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.

Root planing is often performed in conjunction with scaling, which is the removal of plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces. Together, these procedures are frequently referred to as scaling and root planing (SRP). This treatment is a fundamental part of managing periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. It is typically recommended for patients who have developed periodontitis, where the inflammation and infection have spread below the gum line and begun to affect the supporting bone structure.

Following root planing, patients are usually advised on proper oral hygiene techniques, including diligent brushing and flossing, to maintain the results and prevent the recurrence of gum disease. Regular follow-up appointments with the dentist are also crucial to monitor the health of the gums and ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.
