Gyermekülések, often translated as child car seats or infant carriers, are safety devices designed to protect infants and young children in the event of a motor vehicle accident. They are a legal requirement in many countries, including Hungary, to ensure the safety of children during travel. The primary function of a gyermekülés is to restrain the child in their seat and absorb some of the force of a collision, thereby reducing the risk of serious injury or fatality.

There are several types of gyermekülések, categorized by the child's weight, height, and age. These typically include infant carriers, suitable for newborns and very young babies, which are rear-facing and often removable from a base. Convertible seats can be used rear-facing for infants and then turned forward-facing as the child grows. Booster seats are designed for older children who have outgrown forward-facing car seats but are not yet large enough to safely use the vehicle's seatbelt alone.

Proper installation and use are crucial for the effectiveness of any gyermekülés. Most seats attach to the vehicle using either the car's seatbelt system or a standardized latch system known as ISOFIX. It is essential to follow both the car seat manufacturer's instructions and the vehicle owner's manual for correct installation. Regular checks for wear and tear, as well as ensuring the harness is properly adjusted to the child, are also vital for maintaining safety.
