A gyújtótekercs, often referred to as an ignition coil, is a critical component in gasoline-powered internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to transform the low voltage from the vehicle's battery into the high voltage necessary to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine's cylinders. This high voltage creates a spark across the gap of the spark plug, initiating the combustion process.

Each cylinder in a gasoline engine typically has its own dedicated gyújtótekercs, or multiple cylinders may share a single coil in older systems. The coil operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of two windings of copper wire, a primary coil with fewer turns and a secondary coil with many more turns, wrapped around a soft iron core. When a low-voltage current flows through the primary coil, it generates a magnetic field. The engine's control unit (ECU) interrupts this current flow, causing the magnetic field to rapidly collapse. This collapse induces a very high voltage in the secondary coil, which is then directed to the spark plug.

The performance and reliability of the gyújtótekercs directly impact engine efficiency, power output, and emissions. A malfunctioning coil can lead to misfires, rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and illuminated check engine lights. Modern vehicles often utilize "coil-on-plug" designs where the ignition coil is directly mounted on top of the spark plug, minimizing wiring and improving ignition precision.
