Gyógyszerrezisztencia is the term used to describe the ability of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, to withstand the effects of antimicrobial drugs that were previously effective against them. This phenomenon poses a significant threat to global public health, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.

The development of drug resistance is a natural evolutionary process. Microbes can acquire resistance through genetic mutations or by obtaining resistance genes from other microbes. This resistance can arise spontaneously or be accelerated by the overuse and misuse of antimicrobial medications in human medicine, animal agriculture, and the environment. Treating infections caused by MDROs can be challenging, requiring older, more toxic, or more expensive drugs, and sometimes no effective treatment options are available.

Preventing and controlling drug resistance involves a multifaceted approach. This includes promoting the judicious use of antimicrobial drugs, improving infection prevention and control practices in healthcare settings and communities, developing new antimicrobial drugs and diagnostic tools, and fostering international cooperation to monitor and combat the spread of resistant pathogens. Public awareness and education about the importance of appropriate antimicrobial use are also crucial components in addressing this growing global health crisis.
