Gumopásztázások, often translated as "rubber scans" or "gumming scans," is a term originating from the early days of digital imaging and facsimile transmission. It refers to a method of image compression or encoding where a scanned image was treated as if it were made of a continuous, rubber-like material. This concept allowed for a degree of elasticity in how the data was interpreted and transmitted.

The core idea behind gumopásztázások was to exploit the potential redundancy and uniformity within certain image areas. Instead of transmitting every single pixel individually, the system would identify contiguous regions of similar color or tone. These regions would then be encoded in a more efficient manner, often by representing them as a single data block with associated attributes like color and extent. This was analogous to stretching or compressing a piece of rubber to cover a larger or smaller area while maintaining its essential characteristics.

This technique was particularly useful in scenarios where bandwidth was limited, such as early fax machines or slow dial-up modems transmitting images.
