Gauging, which is sometimes misspelled as guaging, is the act of measuring or estimating the size, amount, or degree of a quantity, typically using an instrument called a gauge. The term covers both the process of obtaining measurements and the measurement results themselves. It is used across many fields to assess conformity, quantity, or level.

In manufacturing and engineering, gauging is central to quality control. Dimensional gauging verifies that parts meet design tolerances. Go/no-go gauges provide rapid pass/fail assessments, while higher-precision devices such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and dial indicators quantify deviations from nominal dimensions. Gauging can also evaluate thickness, flatness, and fit between components, as part of routine inspection or final assembly checks.

In metrology and instrumentation, gauging spans methods for assessing length, diameter, pressure, level, temperature, and other physical properties. Common tools include mechanical gauges (calipers and micrometers), bore gauges, dial indicators, coordinate measuring machines, pressure gauges, and liquid-level sight or electronic gauges. In civil engineering and rail transport, the term gauge is used to describe a standard distance between reference planes, such as track gauge, which must be maintained for system compatibility.

Gauging results rely on proper calibration and traceability to standards. Practices typically include following documented procedures, recording observations, estimating measurement uncertainty, and maintaining calibration records.
