Grondgolven, also known as seismic waves, are vibrations that travel through the Earth's layers as a result of an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or human-made explosion. They are the primary way scientists study the Earth's interior, as they reveal information about density, temperature, and composition at different depths.

There are two main types of seismic waves: body waves and surface waves. Body waves travel through the Earth's interior. P-waves (primary waves) are compressional waves that travel the fastest and can move through solids, liquids, and gases. S-waves (secondary waves) are shear waves that travel slower than P-waves and can only travel through solids.

Surface waves travel along the Earth's surface and are generally slower than body waves but can cause significant damage. Love waves cause horizontal shearing motion, while Rayleigh waves create a rolling motion similar to ocean waves. The recording of these waves by seismographs is crucial for determining the location and magnitude of earthquakes. Studying the patterns of ground waves allows geologists to map fault lines, understand tectonic plate movement, and even detect underground structures.
