gravitationsinstabilitet
Gravitationsinstabilitet, often translated as gravitational instability, describes a phenomenon where small density fluctuations in a self-gravitating system grow over time due to the attractive force of gravity. In such a system, regions with slightly higher density exert a stronger gravitational pull than less dense regions. This increased pull attracts more matter, further increasing the density of those regions. Conversely, less dense regions are weakened by the gravitational pull of denser areas, causing them to lose mass and become even less dense.
This process leads to a runaway effect where initial, minor variations in density can amplify significantly.
