Granulacja, or granulation, is the process of forming granules—small, cohesive particles—usually from a powder or melt. The concept is widely used across industries and disciplines, with applications that range from manufacturing and agriculture to biology and medicine. In each context, the goal is to improve handling, performance, or biological outcomes by controlling particle size, density, and flow properties.

In pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, granulation is a key step in tablet and capsule production. Methods include wet granulation, where a liquid binder binds particles into granules, and dry granulation, which uses pressure to form compacted granules without a liquid phase. The resulting granules enhance flow, compressibility, and content uniformity, facilitating uniform dosing. Processing steps typically involve milling, blending, granulation, drying, sieving, and final blending before compression.

Granulation is also used to produce and manage materials like fertilizers, detergents, and animal feeds. Creating granules improves handling, reduces dust, stabilizes components, and enables controlled release or targeted delivery of nutrients or actives.

In environmental biotechnology, granular sludge refers to dense, mineral-encased microbial aggregates formed during anaerobic digestion. Granulation enhances settleability, nutrient removal, and reactor performance, enabling higher organic loading and more efficient treatment.

In medicine and wound care, granulation describes the formation of granulation tissue during the proliferative phase of healing. This pink, vascular tissue fills wounds and provides a scaffold for cell growth and re-epithelialization, contributing to tissue regeneration.
