Gramatins are a term used in some scientific discussions to describe a proposed class of bioactive small molecules associated with grain tissues and plant–microbe interfaces. There is no universally accepted definition, chemical characterization, or formal recognition in major nomenclature, and the term appears only intermittently in the literature. Because of this, gramati ns often functions more as a placeholder label than as a defined chemical family.

In the few sources that use the term, gramati ns are described as either plant-derived secondary metabolites linked to seed physiology or as microbial or endophytic compounds that accumulate in grain- or grain-adjacent environments. Reported properties are diverse, ranging from tentative signaling roles to involvement in defense or modulation of germination. The precise structures, biosynthetic pathways, and mechanisms of action, however, remain unclear, and definitions can vary substantially between authors.

The lack of consensus has led some researchers to regard gramati ns as a catch-all category for poorly characterized granular substances observed in grain tissues, rather than a coherent, well-defined class of molecules. In other perspectives, gramati ns are envisioned as a real but poorly understood family with heterogeneous members, suggesting the need for standardized characterization before broader interpretation.

Because of limited and fragmented evidence, gramati ns are not routinely targeted in standard metabolomic surveys or in routine phytochemical classifications. Further study, including standardized extraction, structural elucidation, and functional assays, would be required to determine whether gramati ns represent a distinct chemical class or a collection of diverse, context-dependent compounds.
