Graft copolymers are macromolecules in which side chains of one polymer (the grafted component) are covalently bonded to the backbone of another polymer (the main chain). This architectural variety creates comb- or bottlebrush-like structures that differ from random or block copolymers in their distribution of monomer units and their physical properties.

They are prepared by several grafting strategies. In the grafting-from approach, polymerization is initiated from reactive sites on the backbone, growing side chains outward. In grafting-to, pre-formed side chains are attached to the backbone via coupling reactions, and grafting-through involves polymerizing macromonomers that already bear side chains. Methods include free-radical grafting, controlled radical polymerization (such as ATRP or RAFT), and various condensation or click chemistry techniques. The choice of method influences graft density, side-chain length, and the overall architecture.

The properties of graft copolymers depend on the nature and proportion of the grafted chains, their length, and how densely they are packed along the backbone. They can alter solubility, compatibility, crystallinity, rheology, and thermal behavior, enabling fine control of material performance. Dense grafting can yield bottlebrush polymers with unique viscoelastic and surface properties, while sparse grafting can enhance compatibility in blends or modify interfacial adhesion.

Applications span many areas. They serve as compatibilizers for immiscible polymer blends, improving interfacial adhesion between components. They are used in hydrogels and superabsorbent polymers, where grafted chains impart swelling or binding capabilities. They also find use as coatings, rheology modifiers, adhesives, and in drug delivery or bioengineering contexts, where tailored interactions with biological environments are advantageous.
