These snails are characterized by their ornate shells, which often feature spines, knobs, or ridges. Species within the Gorgia genus are predators, feeding on other invertebrates such as bivalves and barnacles. They possess a radula, a ribbon-like structure covered in tiny teeth, which they use to bore through the shells of their prey. Some species have also been observed to be scavengers. The reproductive cycle typically involves the laying of egg capsules, which are often attached to the seabed or other hard surfaces.

Historically, some species of murex snails, including those that might be classified under Gorgia, were a source of valuable purple dye, known as Tyrian purple. This dye was extracted from the glands of the snails and was highly prized in ancient civilizations for its richness and colorfastness. The process of harvesting the dye was labor-intensive, contributing to its expense and exclusivity. Today, the commercial exploitation of these snails for dye production has largely ceased, though they remain of interest to marine biologists and shell collectors.
