Gonádok are the primary reproductive organs in animals. In males, these are the testes, and in females, they are the ovaries. Gonads are responsible for producing gametes, which are the reproductive cells (sperm in males and eggs in females). They also produce hormones that are crucial for sexual development and the regulation of the reproductive cycle.

The development of gonads begins during embryonic development under the influence of specific genes and signaling pathways. Hormonal signals, particularly from the pituitary gland, regulate the maturation and function of gonads after puberty. The testes produce androgens, such as testosterone, which are responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and sperm production. Ovaries produce estrogens and progesterone, which are essential for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, the menstrual cycle, and pregnancy.

The production of gametes by gonads is known as gametogenesis. Spermatogenesis occurs in the testes, continuously producing sperm throughout a male's reproductive life. Oogenesis occurs in the ovaries, where a finite number of immature eggs are present at birth, with a limited number maturing and being released during each reproductive cycle. The hormones produced by gonads have widespread effects on the body, influencing mood, bone density, muscle mass, and other physiological processes. Disorders affecting gonadal function can lead to infertility, hormonal imbalances, and various health issues.
