Glycogenesiä, also known as glycogen synthesis, is a metabolic process that involves the conversion of glucose into glycogen, a polysaccharide used for energy storage in animals and some bacteria. This process occurs primarily in the liver and muscle cells, where glycogen is stored for later use. Glycogenesiä is a crucial component of carbohydrate metabolism, ensuring that excess glucose is stored efficiently and can be released when energy is needed.

The process begins with the phosphorylation of glucose by glucokinase or hexokinase, which converts glucose into glucose-6-phosphate. This step is followed by the conversion of glucose-6-phosphate into glucose-1-phosphate by phosphoglucomutase. Glucose-1-phosphate is then activated by uridine diphosphate glucose pyrophosphorylase (UGPase), forming uridine diphosphate glucose (UDP-glucose) and pyrophosphate. UDP-glucose is the universal glucose donor in glycogen synthesis.

The addition of glucose units to the glycogen polymer occurs through the action of glycogen synthase, which catalyzes the transfer of glucose from UDP-glucose to the growing glycogen chain. This process continues until the glycogen molecule reaches a certain size, at which point it is released from the synthase and stored in the cell.

Glycogenesiä is regulated by various factors, including hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which influence the activity of key enzymes in the pathway. Insulin promotes glycogen synthesis by activating glycogen synthase and inhibiting glycogen phosphorylase, the enzyme responsible for glycogen breakdown. Conversely, glucagon stimulates glycogen breakdown by activating phosphorylase and inhibiting synthase.

Glycogenesiä plays a vital role in maintaining glucose homeostasis and energy balance in the body. It ensures that glucose is stored efficiently when energy is abundant and released when needed, thereby supporting the body's metabolic needs.
