This depolarization opens voltage-gated calcium channels, allowing calcium ions to enter the beta cells. The influx of calcium triggers the fusion of insulin-containing vesicles with the cell membrane, resulting in the release of insulin into the bloodstream. This process is crucial for regulating blood sugar levels.

For instance, in many cell types, a high glucose concentration can stimulate the uptake of glucose and its subsequent processing through glycolysis and other metabolic pathways.
