Gliomatyyppejä refers to different types of gliomas, which are tumors that arise from glial cells in the brain or spinal cord. Glial cells are a type of supportive tissue in the nervous system. Gliomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor in adults. They are classified based on the type of glial cell they originate from and their microscopic appearance.

Common types of gliomas include astrocytomas, which develop from astrocytes. Astrocytomas can range from slow-growing (low-grade) to rapidly growing and aggressive (high-grade), such as glioblastoma. Another type is oligodendroglioma, originating from oligodendrocytes. Ependymomas arise from ependymal cells, which line the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord. Mixed gliomas, such as oligoastrocytomas, contain cells from more than one glial lineage.

The grade of a glioma, typically ranging from I to IV, indicates its aggressiveness and how quickly it is likely to grow and spread. Lower-grade gliomas (I and II) are generally slower growing and may be treatable with surgery alone or with less aggressive therapies. Higher-grade gliomas (III and IV) are more invasive, grow more rapidly, and often require a combination of treatments including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Diagnosis usually involves imaging techniques like MRI and a biopsy for histological examination. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific type, grade, location, and molecular characteristics of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health.
