Gletscherabtragung, also known as glacial erosion or glaciation, is a geological process where glaciers shape and sculpt the landscape through various mechanisms. This process is particularly active in regions with significant glaciation, such as the polar areas and high mountain ranges. Glaciers are massive bodies of ice that move slowly over the land, eroding the surface and transporting the eroded material.

The primary mechanisms of gletscherabtragung include abrasion, plucking, and freeze-thaw weathering. Abrasion occurs when the glacier's base, covered in rock debris, acts like sandpaper, grinding away at the underlying rock. Plucking involves the glacier lifting and carrying away large chunks of rock as it moves. Freeze-thaw weathering happens when water seeps into cracks in the rock, freezes, and expands, eventually breaking the rock apart.

Glaciers also transport the eroded material, depositing it in new locations as they retreat. This deposition can create various landforms, such as moraines, drumlins, and eskers. Moraines are ridges of sediment deposited by the glacier, while drumlins are streamlined hills formed by the movement of glacial ice. Eskers are sinuous ridges of sand and gravel deposited by meltwater channels within the glacier.
