Glaucoma related refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye. The increased pressure, known as intraocular pressure, can be a result of a buildup of fluid in the front of the eye that drains too slowly. Over time, glaucoma can lead to vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

There are several types of glaucoma, with the most common being open-angle glaucoma. In this form, the drainage angle of the eye is open, but the fluid doesn't flow through it properly. Another type is angle-closure glaucoma, which occurs when the iris is very close to the drainage angle in the eye. If the angle becomes completely blocked, pressure can rise suddenly, causing acute angle-closure glaucoma. Other less common forms include normal-tension glaucoma, where optic nerve damage occurs even though eye pressure is within the normal range, and congenital glaucoma, which is present at birth.

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma often progresses slowly and painlessly, with vision loss occurring gradually, usually starting with peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma, especially the acute form, can cause sudden, severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and halos around lights. Regular eye check-ups are crucial for early detection, as glaucoma related damage is irreversible. Treatment typically focuses on lowering intraocular pressure through prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment, or surgery.
