Glassfremstilling, or glassmaking, is the process of creating glass, a transparent, amorphous solid material. The fundamental principle involves heating a mixture of silica-rich materials, typically sand, with fluxes and stabilizers to a molten state. The most common type of glass, soda-lime glass, comprises silica (sand), soda ash (sodium carbonate), and limestone (calcium carbonate). Silica provides the glass-forming network, soda ash lowers the melting point, and limestone improves durability and prevents water solubility.

The raw materials are carefully weighed and mixed, then fed into a furnace heated to very high temperatures, often exceeding 1500 degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, the mixture melts into a viscous liquid. The molten glass is then shaped using various techniques. Blowing is a common method where a gob of molten glass is inflated with air using a blowpipe. Molding involves pouring or pressing the glass into a mold. Float glass, used for windows, is made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin, creating a perfectly flat and uniform surface.

After shaping, the glass is cooled slowly in a process called annealing. This controlled cooling prevents internal stresses from forming, which could cause the glass to crack or shatter. Annealing is crucial for the structural integrity of the glass. Various additives can be introduced to the glass mixture to impart specific properties or colors. For example, metal oxides are used to create colored glass. The finished glass can then undergo further treatments like cutting, polishing, or tempering for increased strength. Glassmaking has a long history, with evidence of its production dating back thousands of years.
