Glasplaten (glass plates) are flat pieces of glass that function as substrates, supports, or working surfaces in science, art, and industry. They are produced in a range of thicknesses and sizes, and from different types of glass, to suit specific applications.

Common materials include soda-lime glass for general use, borosilicate glass for chemical resistance and thermal stability, and fused silica or quartz for high UV transparency. Typical laboratory glass slides measure about 75 by 25 millimeters with a thickness around 1 millimeter, while larger plates can serve as base surfaces or display panels.

Uses include microscopy slides and cover slips, where glass provides a rigid, transparent substrate; historical or specialized photography and printing, where glass plates served as photosensitive bases or printing plates; and optical or decorative applications, such as coatings, microfabrication substrates, and laboratory surfaces.

Care and handling: Glass plates are fragile and should be handled with care; avoid sudden temperature changes. Clean with mild detergent and a soft cloth, and avoid abrasive cleaners. Store plates upright or flat in a padded rack to prevent chipping or breakage.
