A gearbox, also known as a transmission, is a mechanical system that uses gears to transmit torque and speed from a power source to a driven load. Gearboxes are essential components in many machines, including vehicles, industrial equipment, and robotics. Their primary function is to alter the speed and torque of the rotating shaft of a motor or engine. This is achieved by using a set of meshing gears of different sizes. For example, in a car, lower gears are used for starting from a standstill, providing high torque for acceleration, while higher gears are used for cruising at higher speeds, offering lower torque but greater efficiency.

Gearboxes can be classified into several types, including manual, automatic, and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). Manual gearboxes require the operator to manually select gears. Automatic gearboxes shift gears automatically based on vehicle speed and engine load. CVTs use a belt or chain and pulleys to provide an infinite range of gear ratios, allowing for smoother acceleration and potentially better fuel economy. The design and complexity of a gearbox depend heavily on its intended application and the performance requirements it must meet.
