Georeferoinnit, often translated as georeferencing, is the process of assigning geographic coordinates to geographic data. This allows for the spatial location of information to be precisely defined and understood within a geographic information system (GIS) or other mapping applications. Without georeferencing, data might exist but would lack a connection to a specific place on Earth.

The core idea behind georeferencing is to establish a relationship between the coordinates of an image or other spatial data and a real-world coordinate system. This can be achieved by identifying known points on the data and their corresponding real-world coordinates. For example, when georeferencing an old paper map, one might identify the location of a city hall on the map and then find its precise latitude and longitude. By having multiple such control points, a mathematical transformation can be calculated to warp or rubber-sheet the data so that it aligns with the target coordinate system.

Different methods exist for georeferencing, depending on the type of data and the required accuracy. For raster data like scanned maps or aerial photographs, this often involves picking points on the image and matching them to known coordinates in a GIS. For vector data, georeferencing might involve assigning coordinates to points, lines, or polygons based on existing spatial information or survey data.
