A geluidsmeter, or sound level meter, is an instrument used to measure sound pressure levels in decibels. It measures the intensity of sound waves in air, converting them into electrical signals that are processed by electronic circuitry. The device is widely employed in industrial safety, environmental monitoring, acoustics research, and architectural design.

Sound level meters are typically calibrated to an industry standard, such as ISO 9613 or ANSI S1.1. Calibration ensures that the meter reads within ±1 dB across its measurement range. Most modern geluidsmeters are digital, offering features such as frequency weighting (A, C, Z), logarithmic or linear scales, and integration time settings (e.g., 1 s or 3 s). Some units provide “Sound Panorama” capability for three‑axis measurements, useful in musical acoustics.

There are three main measurement typologies: Type 0 (discrete frequency and time resolution), Type 1 (live or continuous measurement with logarithmic weighting), and Type 2 (pre‑recorded evaluation, often used in research). Many industrial applications demand Type 1 meters because they supply real‑time data required for compliance with occupational noise regulations, such as the Dutch Wet Arbeidsomstandigheden or EU Directive 2003/10/EC.

In addition to environmental noise complaints, geluidsmeters are essential for evaluating sound transmission in buildings, assessing the effect of noise barriers, and verifying audio equipment performance. Their data is often reported as equivalent continuous sound level (Leq), maximum level (Lmax), or short‑time level (L10, L90). The accuracy of a geluidsmeter depends on its ambient conditions: temperature, humidity, and airflow can subtly impact readings. Consequently, measurement protocols include pre‑conditioning of the meter and standardized placement (3 m height, 2 : 1 distance from the source).
