Gel matrices are three-dimensional, crosslinked polymer networks that swell in a solvent to form soft, gel-like solids. The network traps a large amount of liquid within its pores, while remaining rigid enough to support diffusion and mechanical integrity. Gel matrices are used as scaffolds, supports, or reactive media in chemistry, biology, and materials science. In literature, the term gel matrices is more common; gelmatrices is a concatenated variant occasionally used.

They are produced by crosslinking polymers such as agarose, gelatin, alginate, polyacrylamide, or polyethylene glycol derivatives. Crosslinking can be physical (entanglements, ionic interactions) or chemical (covalent bonds). In situ gelation allows gels to form within containers or devices, while preformed gels can be swollen by immersion. The pore size and stiffness are governed by polymer composition, concentration, crosslink density, and solvent conditions.

Functionalization with ligands, charged groups, or reactive moieties enables selective binding of biomolecules, enzymes, or cells. Gel matrices are highly tunable: increasing crosslink density reduces pore size and diffusion rates, while adding functional groups controls chemical compatibility and bioactivity. They tend to be biocompatible when built from natural polymers, though synthetic gels offer greater chemical stability.

Common applications include gel electrophoresis and size-exclusion chromatography, where gel matrices separate or filter solutes by size. In biotechnology, gels serve as immobilization matrices for enzymes and cell cultures, as tissue engineering scaffolds, and as components in drug delivery devices or biosensors. They are also used in microfluidic devices and 3D cell culture models to study interactions in a hydrated, soft matrix.
