Gazetë refers to the Albanian word for "newspaper," representing a traditional medium for disseminating news, opinions, and cultural content. In Albania and among Albanian-speaking communities worldwide, gazetë have played a significant role in shaping public discourse, political awareness, and national identity since the late 19th century. The term originates from the Ottoman Turkish word gazete, which itself derives from the Italian gazzetta, meaning a small sheet of paper.

The first Albanian-language gazetë emerged during the Albanian National Awakening (Rilindja) in the mid-1800s, as intellectuals sought to promote Albanian language and culture. Early publications like Koha (1886) and Shqipëria e Re (1908) were instrumental in fostering national consciousness. After Albania’s independence in 1912, gazetë became central to political debates, with newspapers like Kombi and Bashkimi reflecting partisan views during turbulent periods such as World War II and communist rule.

Under communist governance (1944–1991), gazetë were heavily censored and state-controlled, serving as propaganda tools for the regime. Titles like Zëri i Popullit (Voice of the People) were the primary sources of official information, while independent journalism was suppressed. The fall of communism in 1991 marked a transition toward a more pluralistic press, though challenges such as economic instability and political interference persisted.

Today, gazetë in Albania operate within a diverse media landscape, including print, digital, and broadcast formats. While traditional print gazetë remain influential, online platforms have expanded access to news. Notable contemporary publications include Koha Ditore, Shekulli, and Albania Facts, which cover local, regional, and international affairs. Despite progress, issues like media concentration, limited advertising revenue, and occasional self-censorship continue to affect journalistic integrity. Gazetë remain a vital institution for informing citizens and fostering democratic engagement in Albania and Albanian diaspora communities.
