Gas mixing is the deliberate combination of two or more gases to achieve a target composition. It is used in calibration gas production, process gas blending, and controlled atmospheres. The composition is usually described by mole fraction, volume fraction, or partial pressure, and mixtures may approximate ideal behavior or reflect non-ideal interactions at high pressure or when reactive species are present.

Mixing methods vary. In passive mixing, gases diffuse and slowly homogenize in a sealed vessel. In active (dynamic) mixing, separate gas streams are combined using flow controllers and a mixing chamber to reach a defined output composition. Common devices include mass flow controllers, flow meters, and static mixing elements that promote rapid homogenization. Batch mixing allows thorough equilibration before use, while continuous mixing maintains a steady composition for production or testing.

Measurement and control are essential. Gas composition is monitored with sensors or analyzers and compared against a target; adjustments are made through the governing flow rates. Safety and quality considerations include ensuring purity, avoiding hazardous reactions, and implementing leak detection, ventilation, and regulatory compliance. In calibration and analytical settings, traceability to reference standards is important.

Applications range from calibrating instrumentation and creating special atmospheres for materials processing to supplying inert or reactive gas blends for experiments. Limitations include non-ideal behavior at high pressure or high reactant activity, and the time required to achieve homogeneous mixtures in large volumes.
