Gas distribution refers to the network and activities involved in delivering natural gas from transmission pipelines to end consumers, including residential, commercial, and industrial users. It operates at low to moderate pressures and forms the final stage of the gas supply chain after the transmission system.

Key components include distribution mains, service lines, pressure-reducing stations, regulators, valves, metering and measurement equipment, odorization facilities, and a centralized control and monitoring system such as SCADA. The system also includes compression stations at intervals to maintain flow, and safety devices.

Operators balance supply and demand, monitor pressure, isolate sections with valves, perform leak detection, maintenance and inspection, and coordinate with transmission operators. Odorization ensures leak detection; metering measures consumption; service connections deliver to customers.

Gas distribution is subject to safety regulations and pipeline integrity programs. Regular inspections, corrosion protection, materials standards, incident reporting, and emergency response plans are common components. Public awareness campaigns and customer safety information are typically provided.

Network modernization includes automation, digital telemetry, smart metering, advanced leak detection, and grid resilience against extreme weather. Challenges include aging infrastructure, safety, demand fluctuations, and the transition toward lower-carbon gases or hydrogen blending.
