Ganglion, also known as a ganglia in plural, is a cluster of neuronal cell bodies located outside the central nervous system. They serve as relay stations where signals are processed before being transmitted to appropriate tissues. Ganglia are integral components of the peripheral nervous system and can be found throughout the body.

Structurally, a ganglion contains axons, dendrites, synaptic terminals of neurons, and surrounding glial cells that provide support and metabolic assistance. The neuronal soma (cell bodies) occupy a central region, while the processes extend to form connections with other neuronal elements. The encapsulating connective tissue gives ganglia a compact, rounded appearance.

There are several categories of ganglia based on location and function. Sensory ganglia, such as dorsal root ganglia, gather afferent signals from sensory receptors. Autonomic ganglia, including sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia, modulate involuntary physiological processes like heart rate and digestion. Prevertebral ganglia, situated near major arteries, coordinate complex reflex pathways. Additionally, specific ganglia such as the cerebellar pontine or olfactory germinal centers have specialized roles.

In function, ganglia process incoming neural impulses, sometimes integrating multiple inputs before dispatching outgoing signals. This relay operation allows for a rapid and efficient communication system between the nervous system and peripheral targets. Reflex arcs often involve ganglia as crucial intermediaries.

Clinically, dysfunction of ganglia can contribute to neuropathic pain, autonomic dysregulation, or motor deficits. Certain infections and tumors can directly affect ganglionic tissue, leading to localized discomfort or systemic symptoms. Understanding ganglionic anatomy and physiology is essential for diagnosing and treating disorders of the peripheral nervous system.
