Gammadensitometry is a medical imaging technique used to measure the density of gamma rays transmitted through a substance. This method is primarily employed in the assessment of bone mineral density, a critical factor in diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis. The technique involves directing a low-dose gamma ray beam through a specific area of the body, typically a bone such as the hip or lumbar spine. Detectors positioned on the opposite side measure the amount of radiation that passes through. Denser tissues, like bone, absorb more gamma rays, resulting in a lower signal reaching the detector. Conversely, less dense tissues allow more radiation to pass through. By analyzing the attenuation of the gamma rays, a quantitative measurement of bone mineral density can be obtained.
